NDP 2020 – Together, A Stronger Singapore. The Whats and the Wheres. #SGUnited

Singapore’s 55th birthday will be a unique experience for all, to say the least.

In light of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the annual National Day Parade (NDP 2020) will ditch its original plan to celebrate at The Float @ Marina Bay. And for the first time, there will be no live audience.

Instead, the focus will be on letting Singaporeans to celebrate close to home. Expect some NDP 2020 segments – including the crowd-favourite red lions and resplendent fireworks – to move into the heartlands. Find out where they are happening below and if they are happening right at your doorstep!

Remember to mask-up and practice social distancing as much as possible when witnessing these celebratory moments.

What to Expect for NDP 2020?

The NDP will be broken into two segments, with a morning parade and ceremony held at the Padang, and an evening show at the Star Performing Arts Centre.

On top of celebrating 55 years of independence and progress, NDP 2020 will also pay tribute to the dedicated front-line heroes and sheroes who are fighting tirelessly against the pandemic.

1. Fly Our Flag

Kickstart the morning of NDP 2020 with a broadcast of the National Day Message from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Then, a parade – made up of about 200 contingent members – at the Padang will be reviewed by President Halimah Yacob. The highlights? A special salute in appreciation of front-line workers, such as nurses, and the presidential gun salute, which will be conducted at the Padang for the first time.

As soon as they hit play on Majulah Singapura, concurrent flag-raising ceremonies will take place all over Singapore, leading Singaporeans to sing the national anthem from where they are. Two Chinook helicopters, escorted by the AH-64D Apache helicopters, will also be flying state flags across the island; visiting our heartlands.

One state flag will make its way around Singapore along a western route, another will be on an eastern route simultaneously. Eventually, two will meet, forming the shape of a ❤️ (sorta). Talk about putting the “heart” in “heartlands”!

This time, the drive-past will be brought even closer to the key community places such as schools and hospitals. As a sign of recognition for their contributions during this trying time, about 100 front-line and essential workers from sectors including healthcare, essential industries and social service are expected to join in too.

So get ready to wave your flag, cheer the Mobile Column on, as they trundle past your homes!

4. The Red Lions

You know The Red Lions, the very zai and got balls commando parachute team? These daredevils are making their first free-fall jump in the heartlands!

Carrying the state flags, these billowing red-and-white parachutes will streak across the skies before making their landing. They will sign off their thrilling stunt with a salute.

Where to Catch?

The parachute team will be airdropped in two locations at 11am:

  1. Toh Guan Road, close to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH); and
  2. Sengkang, close to Sengkang General Hospital (SKGH)

They will be landing at open fields near SKGH and NTFGH, on Sengkang East Road and Toh Guan Road (near Block 285C) respectively.

5. Fireworks

Adhering to prevailing guidelines for large-scale events, mass NDP performances you are familiar with will take a backseat this year.

Instead, smaller-group items will be used to tell “inspirational and uplifting” stories of Singaporeans during the Covid-19 pandemic at The Star Performing Arts Centre. Similarly, the show will have no live spectators and will pay tribute to front-line heroes and sheroes. Performers featured range from everyday Singaporeans to local celebrities.

The show will culminate in a nationwide anthem and pledge moment, with dazzling fireworks being set off at 10 locations across Singapore at 8.20pm!

Where to Catch?

1. Jurong East Central

Hooray Westies, the best spot to enjoy these NDP delights is undoubtedly Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and its vicinity in Jurong East!

You may be the butt of the “Go Jurong need to bring passport?” joke, but come NDP 2020, your friends wish they were you. Not only do you have the front-row seat to The Red Lions parachuting stunts, but you also get to witness the Roar of Unity and Mobile Column up close as they pass by the hospital.

2. Sengkang East Road

Thanks to Sengkang General Hospital, Sengkang East Way also gets the trifecta of The Red Lions parachute, Roar of Unity and Mobile Column. So prepare to wave your flag and cheer on The Red Lions, military vehicles and jets!
